My first ak.

I went in to a new hunting/sporting goods store today. I was pleasantly surprised that they also had a few military type weapons. I bought a yugo ak underfolder. Looks like a good find for the money.

When I was in the army they let us uncrate and shoot ak's that were captured in Grenada. I havent shot one since then.

I hope my ar's and M1a don't team up on it.

Hey Noob, if you don't mind my asking, what did they get for it? An M70 I am guessing?

KEWL!!

An EXCELLENT choice. You will enjoy it a lot!

Safe and happy shooting..!

Congrats! You have a good weapon there. I would like to make a reccomendation regarding ammo, buy some Wolf Military Classic Hollow Points, specifically. They are loaded with the 8m3 effect series bullet that will fragment with dramatic effect on soft targets, probably the most powerful 7.62x39 load there is in that regard. The regular Wolf hollow points are not the same thing and don't expand or fragment.

I paid 479, 520 something with tax. 2 mags and a bayonet.
Thanks for the ammo info, I will look for some of the wolf military classic.

Bought a couple of them back in December. One regular stock, one folding.....with the bayonet, 2-30rd clips.....

FRN 814.35 out the door at my local dealer.

Re: My first ak.

He couldn't sell to you, I think ( maybe that's just handguns...dunno ) since you're not a TN resident.

He simply orders them....keeps almost nothing in stock. Charges 25 bucks for anything you want over his cost ( and you just pick it out of the dealer catalogs that show the dealer price ) + shipping + tax + 10 bucks for the background call ( TN gets that ).

Monte's Gun Emporium ( Little tiny store...Don't be expecting Cabella's.......ahahahaaa )
(423) 434-4210

I also bought a couple of Ruger 10/22's in stainless for FRN 540 out the door.
Those are sweet.

For example...you could go into Monte with this ad, and he would charge 25 bucks to get it + shipping, tax, guncheck.

Hey TN Andy: thanks for the tel. may give him a call. sounds like you are plugged in. don't know about interstate sales such as with gunbroker, ffl>ffl, but with the local ffl fee + shipping that would add $50 anyway. guess I'll have to simmer in my wishful thinkin'. :bawling: got a 10-22, could use another. saw a drum mag at a gun show but didnt pick it up. :Sorry: it was neat.

Don't simmer too long.....that <400 buck rifle will be 2k when the next gun ban comes along......you can bet the farm on that.

I'm thinking seriously about buying a whole crate of 'em.

Speaking of simmering, I boiled over right at lunch time. My favorite local pawn shop had a nib MAC-90 on GunBroker so I ran over to take a look at it. Couldn't stand it. Got it and a nice Ruskie SKS and an extra 10-22. BTW, if you go ahead and get a case of the cheapo SAR-1s let me know, I'll split the cost with you. OOORAH.

What kind of stock was on it? I'm going to probably pick up a Mak-90 with the thumbhole stock as soon as I get some cash in again. I think it will be around $380 OTD. At first I hated those stocks, but now its kinda growing on me. Especially at that price. Its lightly used, but in great condition.

That looks like you got a great deal Noob. I tried to buy a Bulgarian AK a couple weeks ago with a Drag stock on it, but I found out the darn thing would accept high cap mags. So now, I guess I'll probably go with the Mak-90, although he also has an Arsenal underfolder with milled receiver for about $780. I really don't want to spend that much though. Congrats on the find, if I could find a high quality underfolder with that kind of out the door price, I'd be all over it too! :ARMS1: :ARMS1: :ARMS1:

Yes and no. The ones which are CA legal have a fixed, non-removeable 10 rd magazine built into the receiver.

It was one with a thumbhole stock. NIB for 5 bills. maybe a little high, but they ain't makin' any more. I like the Norinko's for the quality and in this case rarity. The Yugo underfolders are sweet and I would look for one with the 1.5mm receiver. Milled is good.

I don't think $500 NIB is too bad at all. THe days of finding Norincos for $200 - $250 are long gone. From everything I've read they are one of the most rugged and dependable AKs out there anyway. Their stamped receivers are definitely thicker than most. I've also got a NDM-86 in .308 and while the finish isn't quite that of a Russian Dragunov, its definitely a quality made rifle. I've loved it so far.

REV127 01-25-2007 03:56 PM

Re: My first ak.

FWIW I use a customized MAK-90 as my go-to rifle. I like them because they've got a thicker reciever, barrel and chunkier front sight block than most other stamped AK's which translates into better heat handling and occasionally accuracy but at a lower weight than a milled. The double hook trigger is another big plus and the original Chinese trigger group blows the G2 American trigger right out of the water, and that last is much better than most AK triggers. The Mak-90 lacks the side rail that most of the Euro AK's have which means you can't make use of the Russian optics without installing one, but it also means you won't be carrying and ugly lump of dead weight if you mount and Ultimak, Scoutscopes or similar forward scope rail. I paid $400 NIB a few years ago for mine.

The top mods for a MAK-90 on my list are;

1) Gunkote or similar polymer finish
2) Pistol grip conversion
3) Forward mounted scope rail
4) vertical foregrip

As far as accessories go, I'd reccomend the following,

* PVC 3 cell Chinese chest rig. They're cheap, comfy, compact, more durable than the popular cotton version and they're perfectly servicable for walking your property or hurricane duty. With 3 mags in the rig, 1 in the rifle and 6 20rd boxes of ammo in the extra pockets on the rig you'll be able to carry a maximum of 240rds of ammo. Not bad for $20.

* Bulgarian waffle magazines, the real deal circle 10 mags. They're a half lbs lighter than the steel mags, just as reliable and nearly as durable. I have quite a few steel mags too, but they're spares.

Went back to the gun shop today to pick up some ammo and got a very pleasant surprise. I had assumed the Mak-90 he had on his wall was used, but you know what they say about assuming. It was new and unfired. $400 out the door with with an extra high cap mag and couple boxes of ammo...I couldn't pass it up.

Wish me luck with the wife...:D

REV127, can you give a link to the chest rig?

Re: My first ak.

Here is the cotton canvas version, they're pretty popular and cheap.

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=282710

or,

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/AKS701-45529-2714.html

Now as for the PVC version I use, I buy them from a favored local gunstore so I can't vouch for the seller below it's just some cheesey airsoft vendor I turned up in a quick search. They're made or distributed by a company calling itself "UTG" or "Under The Gun" so you could search out your own preferred sites.

http://www.airsoftarms.com/viewprodu...hp?ProdID=4614

This isn't the highest caliber piece of gear in the whole world, just lightweight, compact and functional for most practical civillian eventualities. Please note that they're using it incorrectly in the picture, the straps cross behind your back. It comes with a third strap that wraps around your torso, I removed mine as I don't find it useful.

If you need some a little more hardcore for a decent price I like the chest rig below. This pattern is made by many other manufacturers at varying prices and levels of quality.

Another way to go could be the LBTV (load bearing tactical vest). It has the main chest pockets, can integrate with a web belt enabling utility pouches and a sidearm holster to be worn at the hip. There are many companies that make these vests and the price has come down considerably.
http://www.imsplus.com/ims67.html

Personally, if I were patrolling within 500 feet of my home, I'd choose my FAL with four back up mags (total of 100 rds of .308) with a CZ-52 on the hip. 100 rounds should get me to the house if necessary where I could reload or hunker down and in the field, I'd probably have enough to hold off an unruly mob. The FAL mags I can keep in mag pouches worn on the hip with a web belt for good weight distribution.
http://cgi.ebay.com/German-Army-Mili...QQcmdZViewItem

or
http://cgi.ebay.com/ARMY-ACU-MOLLE-R...QQcmdZViewItem

Just giving other options, since everyone has their own preference and sometimes different circumstances warrant different configurations and gear/weapons systems. One benefit to the chest pouch is that it is also known as poor man's body armor - an added plus if taking fire.

Re: My first ak.

Loaded steel mags will provide some protection against things like shrapnel or bullets that have had a lot of energy bled out of them by passing through intermediate barriers, but don't expect you chest harness to equate to a good kevlar vest or rifle plate. Filled canteens w/ cups and a well-placed e-tool can offer a similar level of a little extra protection at no additional weight.

* canteens or an e-tool can offer similar protection to that of loaded mags in a chest rig but none of these protect nearly as well as a kevlar vest or rifle plate.

Absolutely !! During Clinton's reign of terror, they were going after civilian ownership of body armor, now might be a good time to pick up a level 3 OTV on ebay with a level 4 SAPI plate. The new Dem house and Senate along with Hitlery will undoubtedly tie this (once again) to gangs or terrorism and look to prohibit ownership, or sale at a minimum.

BTW - it must say something when troops in the field abandon their weapons for those of the captured enemy. An AK is a fine battle proven weapon, that can endure mud, sand, non-cleaning and fires a caliber capable of putting down an aggressor with one shot. Kudos !!

I have a gun value question, for any of the experts on the forum. What is an original Colt AR-15 worth? This rifle has an original Colt scope on it, is around 25 years old, and looks almost brand new. Supposedly, it has barely been fired, maybe only 500 rounds through it. The owner says that it has been in his gun safe since purchased new. The outside appearance of the rifle looks to be 95%, or better. Just curious what it is worth. Thanks for any help!

Re: My first ak.

I gave about 800 apiece for the Colts I have......which, considering they are about a 200 buck govt contract price rifle, is bad enough......I sure wouldn't give much more than that for a 'collectible' .....but I'm not much on collectibles.

I see Colts are running 1000 to 1200 bucks now days, but there are a LOT of equally good knockoffs around for couple hundred cheaper. I like my Bushmaster as well as the Colts.

If I were buying today, I'd look at Rock River Arms among others.

Thanks Andy. I saw the Colt scope go for almost $200 on Ebay.
